INTERMEDIATE FOOD HYGIENE
This course is run over a period of six sessions, 10.00 am – 2.00 pm twice a week with the examination usually held the week after the course finishes.
The Intermediate Food Hygiene Certificate of the Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland (REHIS), is aimed at supervisors and food business proprietors, it provides an understanding of the relationship between food hygiene, food poisoning and food spoilage in addition to the socio-economic costs of poor food hygiene.

SAFE MANUAL HANDLING
The Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992, as amended in 2002 (“the Regulations”) apply to a wide range of manual handling activities including lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling or carrying. The load may be either inanimate such as a parcel or a trolley, or animate – a person or an animal.
This course gives useful practical advice for employers, managers, safety representatives and individual employees on how to reduce the risk of injury from manual handling.
The course answers why safety procedures for the safe handling of equipment is necessary, including kinetic handling - how to take care of your back while lifting and carrying, using the proper techniques and how to be both relaxed and more efficient!
An attendance certificate will be issued

LEVEL 2 NATIONAL CERTIFICATE FOR DOOR SUPERVISORS
Elmwood College in partnership with Innpacked Limited Licensed Trade Trainers and SIA Security Industry Authority will be offering the Level 2 National Certificate for Door Supervisors from April 2008.
Who is the qualification for? The Level 2 National Certificate for Door Supervisors is designed for door supervisors already working in licensed retail or wishing to start work in the industry and is awarded to those who pass two examinations covering the basic knowledge and responsibilities of the occupation. This nationally recognised qualification will be the industry standard and will enable a door supervisor to apply for a licence to practise.

What does the assessment involve? There are two examinations, one for each unit. Each examination will have forty multiple-choice questions and will take one hour. While Unit One is a conventional multiple-choice paper, Unit 2 requires you to watch video clips before answering the questions.

What is the BIIAB Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders (SCPLH)?
A requirement of the personal licence application under the new act is evidence of attainment of a statutory qualification accredited by SQA (Regulatory) the SCPLH will provide that evidence.
Who is the BIIAB Scottish Certificate for Personal Licence Holders for?
The qualification is nationally recognised and is designed for anyone authorising the retail sale of alcohol in licensed premises including:

LANDBASED
POTATO ROGUING COURSE
Roguing is an essential practice in the production of healthy seed potatoes. It is the process of identifying and disposing of abnormal plants, including tubers and seed pieces. The affected plants may be diseased, another variety or simply different. The course includes instruction on:
➢ The identification of varieties of potatoes ➢ The identification of virus diseases and variations of potatoes ➢ The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland Inspection Scheme, with all grades and standards required ➢ General roguing practice. The course is based at Elmwood College Farm, with one afternoon theory session which is classroom based
A one weeks course designed for those with limited, or no experience of roguing. It runs from Monday to Friday (inclusive) from 9.15am to 4.15pm, with a one hour lunch break.
Preference will be shown to applicants who are:
➢ Potato trade employers and employees ➢ Farmers and employees ➢ Applicants who are 18 years of age and over ➢ Applicants able to produce proof of having roguing work available to them
The examination consists of three parts:

LAMBING COURSE
No formal qualification required – only a genuine interest in the health and welfare of sheep.
The course is usually held early in the year and is aimed at helping newcomers to lamb their flocks without panicking.

DRYSTANE DYKING
Dry Stone Walling stretches back to the village of Skara Brae in the Orkneys, and the Iron Age brochs of Northern and Western Scotland. Use of this ancient craft is found where large quantities of rock and stone outcrop, and especially where trees and hedges do not grow easily, which is why dry stone walls are most prominent in Northern and Western Britain.
This certificated course by SQA introduces the Drystane Dyker to:
➢ Types of dykes and their construction ➢ Tools used and dyking terminology ➢ Safety ➢ Knowledge of construction and repair procedures
It is aimed at anyone wishing to acquire practical dyking techniques who are physically fit and able. Upon “successful” completion of the course students are awarded an SQA certificate.
Students are taught at Elmwood House and at Elmwood College Farm for a period of five days, six hours a day. Gloves and eye protectors will be supplied. Please wear old clothes!

BASIC CHAINSAW TECHNIQUES

Integrated Training and Assessment Course
Whether you intend to use a chainsaw for crosscutting firewood or for more hazardous operations within the canopy of a tree, the first stage of training is basic chainsaw techniques.
This course is for those with no training or very limited experience in the use of chainsaws and is relevant to new operators of chainsaws within specialist industries where chainsaws are used to cross cut timber products.
The course content includes: maintenance of the saw; operator safety; working procedures and cross cutting practice
Participants
Physically fit employees who are capable of performing heavy manual tasks.
Objectives
The expected learning outcome is that the trainee:
1 Understands the regulations and safety requirements related to the use of the chainsaw 2 Prepares for use and maintains the chainsaw to prescribed standards 3 Cross cuts timber to specified standards of accuracy, using safe efficient techniques 4 Presents produce as specified to facilitate subsequent extraction or loading 5 Fells safely and accurately trees up to one times guide bar length diameter 6 Sneds trees to specified standards of safety and quality 7 Uses appropriate aid tools and techniques for take down of lodged trees and directional felling 8 States the procedures for breakdown of hardwood crowns
Syllabus
1 Protective clothing, safety regulations Fastco 301. Kinetic principles 2 Machine components and functions, controls. Daily, weekly and periodic maintenance of the saw, guide bar and chain. Cold and hot starting techniques. Chain brake testing. Recommended fuel mixtures 3 Cross cutting techniques and safety standards as specified in Fastco 304. Roadside conversion and stacking. Handling aids 4 Conversion of timber to given end product specification. Kinetic principles in moving produce. Aid tools. Presentation in the wood - shortwood and whole pole. Disposal of lop and top 5 Factors affecting choice of felling direction - safety, tree form, climatic conditions ease of subsequent timber movement, facilitation of extraction. Identification of potential hazards (entwined trees, butt rot etc). Felling techniques and safety standards as specified in Fastco 302, for tree up to one times guide bar diameter. 6 Snedding techniques and safety standards as specified in Fastco 303. 7 You may bring your own chainsaw and protective clothing, however if this is difficult these can be provided.

BASIC TREE CLIMBING/SURGERY
Unit Clmc45x (Old Cs38) Basic Tree Climbing and Aerial Rescue Unit Clmc46x (Old Cs39) Using a Chainsaw from a Rope and Harness
Participants will develop practical skills in tree climbing and rescue techniques. On successful completion of this unit of work you will be able to select, prepare and maintain tree climbing equipment, climb trees using recommended techniques and equipment and carry out rescue procedures.
The tree surgery units will allow the student to acquire the skills necessary to remove branches using hand tools/chainsaws safely and to carry out simple repairs to trees. You will learn of the Legislation and Codes of Practice which apply to tree surgery.
Unlike the chainsaw course, this course is not an integrated training and assessment course, but training only. However if you wish to progress further you can sit a test through NPTC or SSTS. Information can be supplied.
*Lantra will issue an “attendance” certificate.
*Please note candidates must have the basic felling certificate from the chainsaw course before progressing to this course.
