Elmwood College student Michael Rice, along with the Elmwood Special Olympics team, has recently returned from successfully participating in the GB Special Olympics 2009 where he scooped five medals.
The team, consisting of 14 students and two coaches, entered the swimming, golfing, netball and athletics categories. Michael won two Gold’s in the softball and 4 x 400m relay, Silver for 1500m race and two Bronze medals for 400m relay and 800m race. Student Daniel Byron also did well, winning a Gold in the 800m relay and a Silver in softball.
Michael was pleased with his results, saying, “I’ve had a good week, it’s been fun.”
Held every four years, The Special Olympic Games provide an Olympic style sports competition for learning disabled athletes across Great Britain. More than 2,500 athletes from 19 regions around the UK took part – and a total of 7,000 medals were won.
Elmwood College Lecturer Craig Martin, who assisted the students during the event as a sports coach said, “These games give young people with a disadvantage the chance to really shine and gain a wonderful sense of achievement. Through successful experiences, athletes can gain confidence and build positive self-images, which go with them into their homes, classrooms, jobs, and communities.”
Last year the team flew out to the Shanghai Olympics and was the first time Elmwood staff and students participated in the international event.
Head of Unit, Tracey Wight said, “Congratulations to Michael, the Elmwood team and all who particupated. Michael is highly valued by all of his fellow students, as well as staff who have all been impressed by his dedication, cheerful attitude and determination to succeed.”
She continued, “The Student Development unit has been working on the development of physical activities to improve the overall learning experience for our students. We ensure the students get as wide a selection of activities as possible as well as inviting them to participate in tournaments and competitions. They also take part in inter college tournaments and national golf competitions. Securing places within the Special Olympics, shows that these teaching methods really have had a positive effect.”
