Elmwood College’s HNC Professional Cookery student, Michael Clark, has recently returned from The Heinz Tomato Ketchup Cook-Off 2011 at Sheffield College, where he took 4th place against tough competition.
Heinz joined forces with the Craft Guild of Chefs and City & Guilds, to stage the event aimed at full-time catering students aged between 17 and 23 who are in their second year at college.
Michael Clark was the youngest chef and the only Scottish student amongst the ten finalists. All of the other finalists short-listed for the competition currently work in Michelin Star restaurants.
Michael created a starter and a main course recipe using Heinz Tomato Ketchup. One of the dishes had to be a classic recipe with a twist and the other an original and innovative contemporary dish.
Michael said, “I really enjoyed taking part and worked hard practising my presentation skills. To come in 4th place out of hundreds of entries has really given my confidence a boost and will definitely help when I progress into the food industry!”
Hospitality Lecturer, Martin Luti, said, “The event offered Michael the chance to compete against other young chefs and see how his skills measured up. He did really well and we’re all really proud of him!”
