The new state-of-the-art salons in Elmwood College Hair & Beauty department had their official opening recently.
Staff and industry guests had the opportunity to tour the new facilities and meet current students as well as receive reflexology treatments from holistic therapy students. There were also product displays and a raffle.
It has been 10 years since the salons last had a major re-fit and as there has recently been a considerable increase in the recruitment of students wishing to study hairdressing, the College felt an investment in new facilities in this area was well justified.
Hair & Beauty lecturing were heavily involved in all stages of the design and planning of the new salons, submitting suggestions prior to the work being carried out. A sum in excess of £70,000 was invested in new equipment and work areas; including a merchandising display, additional workstations, bespoke wall units, environmentally friendly energy saving lighting, storage and waiting areas, in fact everything from new ceilings to floor surfaces.
With five purpose-built salons, students are guaranteed the opportunity to train in the very latest industry-standard facilities. The department is staffed by a range of specialist lecturers and instructors, many of who still work in the industry and bring a wealth of talent and expertise to the classroom. The facilities are open to the public, which allows students to practice on real clients and also to develop their customer care skills.
Hair & Beauty Course Leader, Fiona Craig said, “Achieving a high standard of beauty therapy and hairdressing qualifications demand that teaching facilities are of the highest standard and I can honestly say our facilities will be the envy of many professional salons.”
