Elmwood College volleyball and badminton teams produced excellent performances at the Scottish Colleges Student Sport competition, held at Ravenscraig Sports Centre in Motherwell recently.
Students from eleven Colleges attended the day, which held semi-finals and finals for 4 sports including, football, basketball, badminton and volleyball. It was a highly competitive day with excellent performances from all the students.
The men's volleyball team beat Kilmarnock College winning both sets. They went on to play Telford in the final and were narrowly beaten in a close exciting game.
Volleyball player and HND Sports Coaching student, Daniel Curnyn, said, “The tournament was great fun and extremely well organised. It also provided us with an opportunity to test our skills against some strong opposition. We really enjoyed playing Telford as it made a nail-biting final.”
The ladies volleyball team played well but narrowly missed out on the final, with Telford winning 2 sets to 1.
Anja Boehme, volleyball player and HND Sports Coaching student commented, “This is the second time I have been given the opportunity to represent the College at the Scottish Finals. It was a challenging competition but really good fun. I met some great students from other Colleges and I have made new friends.”
In the mixed badminton doubles, the team were up against some very strong opposition and despite a strong effort, did not manage to get through to the final stages of the event.
Donald Mackay, Sports and Fitness Co-ordinator at Elmwood, said, “This is the third year in a row that the men’s volleyball team have reached the Scottish Finals and the second consecutive year that the badminton players have qualified. Well done to all the students for competing in the competition.”
