There is an unusually pattern emerging down at the Scottish Deer Centre, in that all of their staff, except one have been Elmwood College students!
The Centre currently employs nine former students, including five who studied countryside management, one gamekeeping, two animal care and one horticulture.
Head Ranger, Simon Louden, who studied HNC Countryside Management at Elmwood has worked at the Centre for over 7 years.
He said, “The Centre recognise that Elmwood are specialists when it comes to delivering landbased education. All of the staff at the Centre really are experts in their field and it’s one of the reasons the Centre is so popular with visitors today.”
Simon especially enjoyed the field trips to various Scottish wildlife locations during his time at Elmwood. Describing his experience as a student, he said, “I thoroughly enjoyed the course and found it a good path to help with my future career choices. The course is a great combination of theory and practical, one day you can be in a classroom and the next you will be outdoors. Elmwood has opened doors for me and it has given me invaluable knowledge and confidence, which I call upon every day.
Course tutor, Stuart MacDonald said, “Everyone of these students were extremely committed, with very clear visions of their career goals. I am delighted their hard work has paid off and I’m sure they will continue to go from strength to strength. The fact that they have all been successful applying to work at the Centre shows just how highly regarded Elmwood is by employers.”
The Scottish Deer Centre have over 140 deer (nine species from around the world), regular bird of prey demonstrations in an outdoor theatre, wolf wood where visitors can watch feeding time, Stobo the black highland cow, native red foxes, rare breed soay sheep, regular guided tours with park rangers, trailer rides, treetop walkway and children's indoor and outdoor adventure play areas.
