College Participates in ‘China Now in Event’

There was an element of excitement at Elmwood College as some of their Chinese students prepared for their part in ‘China Now in Scotland’ event, which will be took place in Cupar last month.

The students’ organised events such as, a display of Chinese culture and heritage, where members of the local community dropped in to see art, read about Chinese history and find out some fascinating facts about the Chinese language.

They also hosted a playgroup and girls club involving music, dance and arts and crafts.

A Tai Chi lunch break proved popular, where students offered an abundance of mouth-watering dishes as well as a brief history of the dishes.

International Student Advisor at Elmwood, JoAnn Benjamin, said. “China Now in Scotland has come into being through the energy and commitment of numerous individuals and organisations which recognise the growing influence and impact that China has on our lives. Chinese culture is very different from our own and through this festival, we can learn about this fascinating country and its culture both historic and contemporary. The events were beneficial to our students, helping them connect with the local community and in turn help them learn to appreciate Scottish culture through their interactions with community members.”

China Now in Scotland was officially launched on 21 February 2008 with Spirit - A Chinese Spring Lantern Festival at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. It celebrates contemporary China in the classroom, the boardroom, in gardens, galleries, and in theatres and movies. The programme of events from partners across Scotland features a cast of artists, footballers, singers, business professionals, educators, scientists, musicians and dancers.

China Now in Scotland is part of CHINA NOW - the UK’s largest ever festival of Chinese culture with over 800 events taking place nationwide. In Scotland the programme is supported by the Scottish Government and co-ordinated by the Confucius Institute for Scotland.
