Students Stage a Catwalk Spectacular

Students from Elmwood College’s Hair and Beauty department recently staged a very successful hair and beauty catwalk show.

The event entitled ‘The Four Seasons’ was a competition organised by the Level 3 Hairdressing students as part of their course.  Students were challenged to design hair and make-up styles which captured the essence of each of the seasons.

Freelance make-up artist Karen Bowen judged the beauty therapy award and Fife based salon owners Kathryn Taggerty of Kool Kutz salon in Leven and Paula Clark of Dynamic Hair in St Andrews assisted Lesley Pitt in judging the Hairdressing award, who commented on how the quality of work the students had produced made the judging process very difficult. Elmwood College has recently started a Hairdressing Employers Forum which is aiming to involve local salon owners working together with the college to provide work placement opportunities and encourage all aspects of learning in the workplace.

The hairdressing competition results were 1st Kirsty Burt, 2nd  Louise Keddie and 3rd Claire Connell from Level 2 and 3 Hairdressing  and the beauty winners from Level 2 and 3 Beauty Therapy were 1st Louise Weir,  2nd Avril McDonald and 3rd Jessica Matthew.

Lesley Muir, Section Manager for Hair and Beauty, spoke proudly of the students’ achievement saying, “ The level of technical ability and the creativity demonstrated by the students was outstanding. I am confident that they will go on to win awards at many national competitions in the future and they are looking forward to the forthcoming UKSkills competitions.”

The students have decided to donate the £300 profits from the event to Cancer Network Fife, who provide valuable support to anyone in Fife affected by the diagnosis of cancer.

The hair and beauty salons at Elmwood are open Monday - Friday 9.00 am to 16.30 pm and in addition, some classes also run in the evenings on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.  For further details or to book an appointment call the salon on 01334 658960.

It’s a good course; I really enjoy colouring and cutting. I have made some good friends and am looking forward to coming back next year.
