Interior Decoration students from Elmwood College recently celebrated after scooping 1st and 2nd places at a national competition.
Two teams of students from the National Certificate Interior Decoration class displayed their work in the Dundee Overgate Centre as part of the UK Skills Competition, Visual Merchandising category. The competition is for students and those working in the retail industry which enables them to demonstrate their visual merchandising creative and technical skills in a live competition environment.
First place winners, Debbie Dargie and Debbie Hynd’s display consisted of a ‘Golf Widow’ theme featuring a bride whose husband has left her at their wedding reception to go and play a round of golf. The group used artwork, a St Andrews Old Course backdrop and mannequins to convey the message.
Second place winners, student Zoe Wilcox and Ashley Greig’s display focused on a ‘Think Pink’ theme, highlighting awareness of and supporting Breast Cancer. The students used pink-themed artwork and a pink dressed mannequin to get their message over.
Lecturer Ann Leitch, explained the importance of the competition saying, “It provides students with a very real experience of fulfilling a live brief requirements, meeting a deadline and having the work viewed by the public. The UK Skills Competition Awards are an important way of recognising the superb achievements of people with vocational skills and the students should be really proud that they have come this far.”
She continued, “Its absolutely fantastic that out of the whole of the Scotland, Elmwood students have taken both 1st and 2nd place!”
