Two groups of inspirational staff from Elmwood College recently completed the Cancer Research Relay for Life at Dundee Caird Park. The E-Stars were made up of staff from the College’s Inclusiveness Team, including Kerrie Bell, Lynne Grieve, Heidi Young, Greta Toehill, Donna Bernard, Keith Downie and Michelle McLaren, raised over £1,000.
The Supported Accommodation staff team, known as The Flying Fifers were, Sarah Watson, Evelyn Ferns and Claire Stark. Team captain Sarah came up with the idea of the walk and encouraged colleagues to join in. They raised a staggering £4,000 for Cancer Research.
Margaret Gerrard, Lead Support Assistant said: “The Inclusiveness Team are immensely proud of our colleagues, and those of us who were unable to take part this year, have been inspired to join up next year!”
Evelyn Ferns said: “It was absolutely fantastic seeing so many people turn up for such a good cause. My niece Nikita Lister had leukaemia when she was six years old and seeing her make a remarkable recovery gave me inspiration to do this walk. She is now fourteen and has everything to look forward to in life.
All the staff completed an impressive 26 miles in an overnight event that honours cancer survivors and celebrates life. Each member of the relay team completed 104 laps in over eight hours. At least one member had to be on the track at all times. The event also included a moving Candle of Hope Ceremony where people could remember loved ones.
The College plans to enter teams in next year’s event.
