With the current craze for boutique festivals taking over the summer scene, they don't come much more boutique than Elmwoodstock on the 6th of September.
Responding to a plea from students for more live music, Elmwood College in Cupar, Fife has cleared part of its extensive grounds for a one day festival offering an eclectic mix of bands designed to appeal to everyone.
The festival was suggested after the College’s Guidance Team and Student's Association got together and started to make plans for an event more ambitious than the usual student dance - one that would also excite the local community.
Guidance Manager, Karen Thirkell said, "We must have contacted just about every well known band in Scotland - at least it felt like it! The big breakthrough came when Jo McCulloch, the Student Adviser, got a tip off that Idlewild were back on the road and playing festivals. She got straight on to their management and asked if they would consider playing at Elmwoodstock. When the band said yes it was all systems go!
"That really turned things around." Says Jo, "Idlewild have such a great reputation that as soon as word got out that they were playing, bands started contacting us and asking to join the bill. Eventually we were turning them away."
Other artists appearing include popular Celtic rockers Wolfstone, Glenrothes indie band Sergeant, recently endorsed by NME as one of the best new bands in Scotland and Stars of the Commitments will be coming over from Dublin to inject a bit of soul into the event.
Elmwoodstock will be the culmination of the College’s Freshers’ Week activities and will also be a popular family event featuring craft stalls, food concessions, children’s entertainers as well as a feast of musical entertainment. Don’t delay these are the hottest tickets in Fife!
Elmwoodstock is proud to be supporting the work of Friends of the Earth Scotland and their Big Ask Campaign, designed to create awareness of climate change. A percentage of the events profits will be donated to enable them to continue their vital work on environmental issues.
Tickets are available through the College Ticket Hotline 01334 658855 or online through Ticketmaster at www.ticketweb.co.uk. Tickets can also be purchased at Grouchos, Dundee or at Ripping Records in Edinburgh. For more information visit www.myspace.com/elmwoodstock.
