Golf students from Elmwood College tasted success this week when they won the Walter Woods Trophy beating teams from St Andrews University, Abertay University and Dundee University in the process. The tournament was held at Elmwood Golf Course.
The winning team comprised of students, Craig Goodwin, Marc Smith, Andrew Fieldsend, Ben Lindsay, Vincent Kabaso, Craig Armstrong, Kenny Crawford and Gary Page.
The trophy was presented Walter Woods himself. He is a long standing friend of the College and was the Links Superintendent at St Andrews Links for many years before retiring. This goes back around 30 years when Walter was on the first Greenkeeping advisory committee when these courses were first developed.
Walter Woods left St Andrews Links Trust in 1996 after 21 years of tending its links courses (now at six with a seventh course on the way). During this time Woods prepped the Old Course for four Open championships and was instrumental in many changes and improvements to the courses he worked on.
HNC Professional Golf student, Ryan Campbell from Falkirk, is celebrating becoming the new British Colleges Open Champion with scores of 71 & 74 over the Fairmont Golf Course, St Andrews. Elmwood finished third overall in the team event. Ryan formed part of a four-man Elmwood team, including fellow students, Mark Thompson, Jamie Ramage and Grant Dowie.
Elmwood Golf Professional, Graeme McDowall said, “Both of these tournaments really did test the students overall competence. There was a great atmosphere of camaraderie, fun and an appropriate level of competitiveness during the events.”
