Elmwood College has adopted a future-based approach towards the development and management of its estate and land assets to underpin its primary purpose in providing education and training. Using the college campus, golf course and farm as living / working educational resources, it has created opportunities for practical educational experiences and for increased environmental awareness.
As a constituent member of Scotland’s Colleges we advocate for sector wide initiatives in Environmental Management and act as sector champions for this purpose. The Principal chairs a sector-wide group comprising representatives from the Inspectorate, Scottish Qualifications Authority, Scottish Further Education Unit and the Scottish Funding Council and others to progress Education for Sustainable Development in Scotland’s Colleges.
Over the years our efforts have received local, national and international recognition and we now offer a range of training opportunities at various levels in sustainable development as well as acting as consultants to the Scottish College Sector. We have instigated a policy-forming rather than a policy-following culture and represent a benchmark for best practice in Sustainable Development.
As the sector faces up to the challenges posed by the Scottish and UK Climate Change Legislation we would like to make publicly available the College’s ISO14001 Environmental Management System. Originally accredited in 1995 the system has evolved into a robust and sustainable resource that informs behaviour of all organisational departments. The system is appropriate to any small or medium enterprise in a service sector particularly education. Please feel free to download any of our procedures and adapt them to your own needs, but, bear in mind, the documentation should not be used as a blueprint, every organisation is different and will generate its own unique environmental aspects.
If your organisation requires further information, help or support in relation to ISO14001 Environmental Management Systems please get in touch with Karen Dawson 01334 658886 firstname.lastname@example.org We will then arrange to discuss with you a programme of activity tailored to your institutional needs.
